    Splish, Splash, and No Crash
Water mishaps in a home can be like uninvited guests at a party – they show up unexpectedly and can be a real downer. That’s where these nifty water sensors come into play. I picked up a pair, one for my heat pump water heater and the other for my washing machine. I must say, they’re like the silent, watchful guardians of my appliances.Imagine this: you’re sitting down for your favorite TV show, and suddenly your phone pings with a notification that could rival any cliffhanger – water detected! That’s what happened to me. Within seconds, I was able to avert a mini flood from my washing machine. The sensor’s responsiveness and the immediate alert to my phone were impressively efficient. It was like having a personal home guard without the need for treats or belly rubs. The setup? A breeze. Even for someone who often gets baffled by tech gadgets, I found the installation process to be straightforward. The design is compact and unobtrusive, blending in seamlessly with my home decor – a small but mighty presence. The second sensor, stationed like a silent guardian angle next to my water heater, hasn’t had its moment of glory yet, but I sleep better knowing it’s there. It’s like insurance; you hope you never need it, but you’re grateful for its existence.Sure, water sensors might not be the most thrilling topic at your next dinner party, but they’re definitely a conversation starter. “Did I ever tell you about the time I nearly had an indoor pool?” is a great icebreaker.Overall, these sensors have brought a sense of security and peace of mind to my home. They’re the unsung heroes in the world of home appliances, quietly guarding against potential disasters. No capes needed, just a reliable alert system and a little bit of tech magic.

Works well; alerted me to an actual leak near my toilet!
Installed new fill valves in our toilets and placed these leak detectors nearby, just to ensure no issues. A couple of days later one of the leak detectors informed me of a detected leak in one of the bathrooms. Upon checking, there had been a very small leak that was happening underneath one of the toilets (the fill valve apparently wasn’t fully tightened). The water had dropped precisely on top of the leak sensor and just enough water accumulated to trigger the sensor.Without this sensor I probably would not have noticed for weeks, as the leak was so tiny that it took several days to even produce enough water to trigger the sensor. If I didn’t have the sensor then I probably would have noticed one day a big puddle and wondered where the heck it came from. Great product! I fixed the leak and no more leaks. Good peace of mind knowing this is keeping watch.

The Aqara Water Leak Sensor is a compact and responsive device that shows great promise.
The Aqara Water Leak Sensor is a compact and responsive device that shows great promise. Its small size and quick setup make it easy to place strategically around your home. The sensor’s impressive speed in detecting water leaks is a standout feature, offering peace of mind against potential water damage.  However, there are some critical limitations to consider. First and foremost, the sensor requires an Aqara hub, which excludes it from compatibility with other Zigbee hubs, even though Aqara produces some of the best in the market. This limitation is a significant drawback for power users who prefer more flexibility in their smart home ecosystem.  Additionally, while the sensor indicates a leak in the Aqara app, setting up a notification for a leak requires additional steps. The app doesn’t clearly guide users through this process, which could lead to missed alerts if not configured correctly. The sensor is advertised to have a 2-year battery life, though I haven’t owned it long enough to confirm this. Replacing the battery is straightforward as it uses a common coin cell battery.  Despite these shortcomings, the Water Leak Sensor’s core functionality is impressive. Its rapid detection time and reliable performance make it a valuable tool for protecting your home from water damage. However, potential buyers should be aware of the limitations and be prepared to invest in an Aqara hub and spend time setting up notifications.

Contrary to the listing, the Aqara Hub is not required if you have a compatible Zigbee Hub
This is my first Aqara product. I purchased it to replace a failed LeakSmart sensor. I’m using Home Assistant with a Conbee II coordinator, using ZHA. The device paired incorrectly on the first attempt. It showed a 0% battery and no Moisture attributes. I deleted the device from HA and reset the Aqara sensor by holding the button for 5 seconds. On the second attempt, the device paired correctly with Moisture, Battery and Temperature attributes available. I added it to my “Water Shutoff” automation and tested it. Everything worked properly. I’ve read that the temperature displayed is the device temperature, not the surrounding air temperature.

These little things work well and have saved me $$ already from leak damage. Easy to connect. Range is very good. Battery should last about 2y and you can see the connection strength. Nice push notifications or alarms are easy to set up. The contacts barely protrude so it might help to set up on some paper towel which will absorb water and conduct it quickly to the contacts.
