    Easy to install
I have a gas water heater and it makes it easier to control the gas but it’s either on or off. It doesn’t turn off the pilot light so it can go back to your set point on the thermostat which makes it more convenient to control when away. You can also set it up for night as well

Can’t recommend it for Energy Star gas water heaters
I installed the Aquanta box when I replaced my 14 year old 50 gallon gas water heater with a new 50 gallon Energy Star gas water heater. The install was pretty straightforward although I did contact support with a question and they promptly replied and helped answer my question. The Aquanta portal is very nice and mobile friendly. I like the fact that they don’t have an app and you just create a link to the website on your mobile device – it’s easy and doesn’t require constant updating. The estimates on daily usage are nice and give you a good sense of usage throughout the week. I’ve compared the therm estimates that Aquanta generates to my utility companies therm usage and they are usually the same or within 1 therm. It would be nice to see more integrations with thermostat makers or smart home hubs as ideally you could set an away event once and the Aquanta could have your water heater follow that schedule. I think it would be nice to have some more advanced analytics available on their site and some things like high usage alerts. Right now you can look at your usage daily, weekly and monthly. It would be nice to see how many hours your water heater was idle or how many hours Aquanta powered it off per day, week or month.I decided to do a test to see if I could determine how much Aquanta is saving me per month. I performed this test in the summer (no gas usage from furnace) after using the Aquanta for 3 months so I had a good idea of average usage. I unplugged the Aquanta from my water heater and let my water heater run as it normally would for 30 days. The therm usage was 1 therm lower than the previous month according to the gas company. This wasn’t a scientific test so the therm difference could have been from lower usage throughout the month – I’m not implying that the Aquanta made my water heater less efficient. My point is that the Aquanta likely makes little difference to my overall therm usage per month (approximately 12 therms/month).Overall I think the device works well and does what it is intended to do. If I had bought a cheaper non Energy Star water heater I think this could saved 1 -2 therms a month based on my old water heaters therm usage (15 therms/month). In my case I could have saved about $100 if I had purchased the Rheem Econet module to schedule away time and probably had the same end result.I gave this 4 out 5 stars for the lack of integrations with other smart home devicesProsSimple installEasy to use websiteEstimates on energy usage are very close to actualAway or Vacation scheduling is simpleConsLack of integrations with smart home devicesMore analytics on their site would be nice (see how often the water heater is on/off, etc.)Cheaper alternatives are available for vacation/away scheduling

Updated: Had to stop using it.
I regret buying it.In the beginning I wasn’t super happy (see original review below), but now I’m just plain frustrated. In a nutshell, their servers have issues and when that happens the device can’t be controlled–not even locally/physically. The result is that I lost hot water for a day or so once every 2-3 weeks in the last few months.Original review:This review applies to the gas heater version.I though that this device would *trigger* the water heater when you need it on. Instead it disables it when you don’t need it on. It’s an important distinction because of the water heater deadband (look it up).Concrete example: say that you want the temp be low over night and go up at 6am. Aquanta will effectively disable the water heater control so that if the temperature gets low, the water heater does not kick in. At 6am it will *allow* it to kick in, but that doesn’t mean that the water heater will do so right away–it will when the temperature drops below the deadband. That means that it may not ignite for quite some time. Ideally it would trigger the water heater to kick in so you’d know the water is available.Because we only need hot water for the shower, I set it up to be always disabled (“away” mode, as they call it), and half hour before taking a shower we enable the water heater (they call it “boost”). We then monitor the temperature and only shower when it’s ready. Note that the temperature is a rough estimate that the device gets from the pipes coming out of the tank–which means it’s more of a guestimate and it’s a bit delayed. It’s a bit tedious but it’s worth it for us for the environment. Not sure there are better solutions short of replacing the heater.

    Highly recommended
I have NG and I’ve seen a noticeable decrease in my gas usage in only my first month. I’m using the Intelligence mode (it monitors usage and finds a good balance) but could easily switch to Time of Use or Scheduling based on my work schedule. If it saves me $10/month going forward then it’ll pay for itself in 1.5 years. Considering the life of an average tank it will save the equivalent of the price of a new tank in 6-7 years. Only wish I could somehow use less water but this is a great alternative to getting a tankless heater.

Insight into what it’s doing very limited, seems well made, easy install
The install was very easy. My only concern is it’s very, very limited in what you can see in app. Historical data by the day only, no curve chart to see how it might actually be saving you (I trust that it is, but it’s a question of degree… does it really get that much cooler over night as I might expect… should I be making it more aggressive, less aggressive?).They seem to be focused on commercial scale with residential owner use secondary. I think a few enhancements to the app could be phenomenal. Even a basic integration for Home Assistant would allow me to see historical. The data seems to be there, just in a closed system, which is not the kind of smart I was hoping for.

    Interesting concept
I ordered the gas water heater version; the first thing I noticed is the instructions are for an electric heater. I am engineer so I reviewed the device and online pages. Originally, I thought there was a relay in the box that would turn on and off the existing electric feed into the gas heater. In reality, the box plugs into an outlet to provide a new electric feed. This does not work in our setup. Our furnace and water heater share a single power vent, so this cannot be connected in our setup.
